Academy of Moore Brings Holiday Cheer to Harris Teeter
Students from The Academy of Moore County performed holiday songs with music teacher Melissa Mayle for customers and staff at the Harris Teeter grocery store in Aberdeen Dec. 13. The students visited the store to purchase 120 frozen turkeys and donate them to the Sandhills branch of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Are You Smarter Than a Moore County Schools' Fifth-Grader?
The Public Education Foundation of Moore County held its first annual "Are You Smarter Than a Moore County Schools' Fifth-Grader?" competition in Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College Nov. 17. The event, which featured 36 local fifth-graders and 12 of Moore County's movers and shakers, came down to the final lightning round between two teams--Cameron and Pinehurst Elementary schools, headed up by Audrey Moriarity and Eric Corbett, and Sandhills Farm Life and Westmoore Elementary schools led by John Dempsey and Marianne Kernan.

Walmart CEO Bill Simon spoke to students and residents Nov. 2 at Sandhills Community College, answering questions submitted by business students about the success behind the world's largest retailer. Simon is responsible for the strategic direction and operational performance of the U.S. business, which includes 3,700 stores and 1.3 million employees.

Eric Whitacre Visits Pinecrest High School
World renowned composer Eric Whitacre conducted a series choral workshops during a three-day residency Oct. 24 through 26 at Pinecrest High School. The sessions culminated in a concert at Robert E. Lee Auditorium Oct. 26, featuring visiting choral and instrumental groups, as well as the Pinecrest Chamber Ensemble. For the students who participated, the chance to work with Whitacre was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Disc Golf in the Pines

Local enthusiasts enjoyed a round of disc golf with professional disc golfers Nate Doss, Avery Jenkins and Valerie Jenkins Oct. 4 at Reservoir Park in Southern Pines. The pros were in town for the Southern Pines premier of "Chains," a documentary film about the underground sport featuring some local players. Since the disc golf course opened at Reservoir Park last spring, interest in the sport continues to grow as more players come out to play.

Union Pines Vikings coach John Frye, Pinecrest Patriots coach Gail Deese, and Vike No.1 player Melissa Tally discuss the October 3, 2011 cross-county tennis match. Union Pines claimed a 5-4 victory in the contest, to notch its first win over the Pinecrest girls' tennis team since 1994. That Patriots claimed each of the previous five meetings between the two squads, including a 5-4 win last season.

Joe Gibbons, a retired New York City firefighter couldn't shake the immense loss he felt on Sept. 11, 2001 as so many firefighters and police officers died trying to save victims of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. So in order to keep the legacy of those lost alive, he built a tribute wall in his Pinehurst garage honoring firefighters in New York City and all over the United States as a daily reminder of the sacrifice that was made on 9/11 and the significant contributions that have been made since.

For Frank and Linda Guerra, the realities of what happened on Sept. 11, 2001 hit all too close to home. On that day, Frank Guerra's granddaughter, 20-year-old Deora Bodley, was killed on United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa. She was the youngest passenger on the plane. In the years since Bodley's death, Guerra and his wife, Linda, have worked with "93 Cents for Flight 93," a grassroots movement to keep the story of 9/11 alive for generations to come by educating young people about the what happened that day.

Jodee Blanco Advocates Bullying Awareness
Author and activist Jodee Blanco visited Pope John Paul II Catholic School last month and held a seminar for the public at Sandhills Community College Aug. 18 to raise awareness about the prevalence of bullying in schools. Blanco's seminar, "It's Not Just Joking Around," helps parents, students and educators understand how simple "jokes" can permanently damage a person's self-esteem. Blanco shared her own experiences of being bullied by her classmates as an adolescent.

Pinecrest held a media event Thursday afternoon in preparation for Friday's game against Barron Collier. It will be the first time a high school team from North Carolina has ever played an exhibition game against a team from Florida in the regular season. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
