Falcon Netters Start State Tourney Today

From the start of the season, the O'Neal volleyball team had its collective sights set squarely on a Halloween treat -- playing in the 2-A NCISAA state title game in front of a raucous home crowd.

Now that goal is within reach, starting with a match this afternoon.

O'Neal is hosting the 2-A state volleyball tournament for private schools beginning Friday, and the Falcons are three wins away from playing for a state title.

The No. 3 seed Falcons (15-3) will host conference foe and No. 14 seed Cape Fear Academy (7-9) at 4:30 p.m. today in the tournament's first round.

The winner advances to Friday's quarterfinals to play either sixth-seeded Village Christian Academy (14-6) or 13th seeded Fayetteville Christian School (16-12). That match is at noon in the new gym.

Quarterfinal games set for 10 a.m. and noon on Friday. Semifinals will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The championship game will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the new gym. Friday's games will be played in both gyms.

High Point Christian Academy (30-3) and Asheville Christian Academy (21-3) are the top two seeds in the tournament.
