Ethan Cox spends the afternoon fishing on Shearon Harris Reservoir, his favorite fishing hole, in New Hill Aug. 8. The West End native and recent N.C. State graduate won the Boat U.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship in May with his fishing partner Ben Dziwulski, and now, Cox hopes to fish professionally.

Blaise McNair and his mother Linda wait for their food to arrive during a luau at Texas Roadhouse in Aberdeen Aug. 8. The luau was held to honor McNair's upcoming trip to Hawaii with his family awarded to him by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The 10-year-old has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

Heather Collins, manager of the Moore Humane Society shelter, spends time with Taska, a hound mix, who has been at the shelter since March 2005. The dog has been the shelter's longest resident available for adoption.

Local musicians played to a packed house at Maness' Music Barn in Carthage Aug. 9. Nobody is a stranger at the music barn located on N.C. 24-27, where locals gather every Tuesday for a potluck meal and great music.
