North Carolina's fracking board is considering what its members say would be among the nation's strictest rules governing shale gas exploration as the panel delves into the arcana of updating the state's 1940s-era energy regulations.
Now comes the hard part: writing three studies and creating regulations to govern the safe exploration of natural gas in North Carolina by an October 2014 deadline imposed by the General Assembly.
The Senate's approval of the tracking bill came the same day the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) released a report which estimates that North Carolina has far less natural gas than initially believed.
