Marian Jane Schaub Drum, of Southern Pines, died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at St. Joseph’s of the Pines after a long and fulfilling life.
She was born April 5, 1922, in Pittsburgh, Pa. and lived most of her life in the Southern Pines-Pinehurst area. Marian attended Penn State University and worked as an executive secretary to the president of U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, where she met a young sports writer, Bob Drum Sr.; they married in 1949.
Marian was a contestant and winner in the Mrs. Pennsylvania contest in 1957 and a committed volunteer at the Episcopal Thrift Store and the Meals on Wheels program in Moore County. A loyal fan of Pittsburgh Steelers football team, she loved to watch sporting events and cheering for her teams. Marian was the de facto editor, CEO and bookkeeper for her husband, Bob Drum Sr. From his lengthy career as a sports writer to his Emmy nominated career in broadcasting at CBS Sports, she was the silent partner. Their marriage was proof that “behind every great man is a great woman.”
Surviving are her five children, Debbi Bassett, of Alexandria, Va., Denise Drum Baker and Donna Drum- Thomas, of Whispering Pines, Bob Drum Jr. and Kevin Drum, of Southern Pines; four grandchildren, Justin Baker, Maggie Baker, Katelyn Drum and Kelsey Sukel; and one great-grandchild, Morgan Jane .
The memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, March 11, at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.
The family will receive friends at the home of Steve and Donna Drum-Thomas, 1424 Ray’s Bridge Road, Whispering Pines.
