Edmund Ellsworth Ely, 89, of Pinehurst, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at his home.
A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Chaplain Kenneth Rahal officiating. Military honors will follow. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Family and friends are invited to the home for refreshments following the service.
Mr. Ely was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Lanham, Md., to Harry and Elsie Billingsley Ely. Ed graduated from NC State University, with degrees in landscape architecture and engineering. Notable Louisville, Ky., projects: Wave Garden, The Bellvedere (on the riverfront), Citizens Fidelity Bank/Fountain Garden, Central Park Theatre-Lake Ely, Dave Jones of Humana Estate, Printer’s Alley at Courier Journal, and Bingham’s Estate.
He also served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Anderson Ely; four children, Sarah Ely (Ed Mahony), of Michigan, Linda Arlene Moyse, of Texas, Douglas Moyse (Misty), of Texas, Jan Nedoss (Daniel), of Illinois; three sisters, Lillian, Ruth and Betty; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Elsie Billingsley Ely; three sisters, Elsie, Blanche and Lydia; and two brothers, Kirk and Stayton.
