Marjorie K. Galligan

Marjorie K. Galligan, 84, died at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center in Southern Pines from Alzheimers disease.
Marge was born on July 11, 1928, in New York City, N.Y., to the late Helen Healy Keating and Thomas F. Keating Jr., of Pelham, N.Y. Marge is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, South Handley, Mass., and after three years of working on the college newspaper, she was elected as editor to the newspaper for her senior year. She obtained her master’s and doctorate work at Columbia University Teachers College, New York. Her focus while teaching children in the Pelham, N.Y., school system were in education and guidance at the elementary school level.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Donald Galligan, of Southern Pines; her brother, Tom, of Minnetonka, Minn.; a brother, Damian Victor Galligan FMS, of Dittmer, Mo.; eight nieces and nephews; and 14 grand-nieces and -nephews.
Per Marge’s request, her body has been donated to UNC School of Medicine for advance study in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and other diseases.
At the present time, no further arrangements have been made for funeral or memorial services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center, 103 Gossman Drive, Southern Pines, NC or to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
