Jean Waggoner Smith, 89, of Southern Pines, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at St. Joseph of the Pines.
A graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Carl Matthews officiating.
She was born April 24, 1923, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to the late Floyd Waggoner and Carrie Sessions Waggoner. She married Dan F. Smith Nov. 16, 1940.
Jean was a graduate of University of Michigan, class of 1965, and was a life member of the Alumnae. She was a former member of the American Association of University Women; a member of Daughters of American Revolution; and a former member of The Village Chapel, in Pinehurst, where she served in many capacities. She later became a member of Community Congregational Church, in Southern Pines, then she was active at the Belle Meade Chapel and very involved with Circle of Friends at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Jean was a former member of CCNC Women’s Golf Association and CCNC Garden Club, where she served as various officers of the club. She was a past president of Women’s Pinetop Golf Association and a former reader for the blind in Michigan. She enjoyed golfing, reading and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Smith Wyatt, of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Gary Smith, of Windsor, Calif.; five grandchildren, Michael Proctor and wife, Angela, Gregory Proctor and wife, Kristi, and Stacey Proctor Marshall and husband, Ron, all of Anderson, Ind., and Danielle Smith and Kyle Smith, both of Seattle; six great-grandchildren, Nathan Howell, Colin and Bayli Proctor, Dylan Marshall, and Ramsey and Spencer Proctor, all of Anderson, Ind.; a sister, Ila Butala, of Fort Myers, Fla.; and six nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters.
