Winifred Aline Wainwright
Winifred Aline Wainwright, 89, of Southern Pines, passed Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Elmcroft Retirement Village, in Southern Pines.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Wainwright was born June 13, 1923, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to the late Paul Mills and Marie (Ebbert) Mills. She was a graduate of Hiram College in 1945. She later received her master’s degree in education from West Virginia University.
She taught French at St. Francis High School in Morgantown, W.Va., for 35 years and was the men’s golf coach. She loved taking her French students to France for their school trip.
After retirement in 1985, Mrs. Wainwright moved to Pinehurst, and volunteered at local schools and for various golfing events held at the Pinehurst Country Club.
Winifred was an avid reader and loved the game of golf.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years in 1986, Howard W. Wainwright. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Sprott.
She is survived by her two sons, Richard M. Wainwright and wife, Lynn, of Pinehurst, and William H. Wainwright and , Linda, of Pennsylvania; a sister, Shirley Bailey and husband, Jim, of Ohio; four grandchildren, Jennifer Zimmerman and husband, Brian, of Pennsylvania, John W. Wainwright, of Pinehurst, Joseph P. Wainwright, of Colorado, and Kathryn L. Wainwright, of Pinehurst; and two great-grandchildren, Adam and Brad Zimmerman, both of Pennsylvania.
