Francis Cullom Swanson Choate
Frances Cullom Swanson Choate, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at her home in Pinehurst.
Frances was born in Winston-Salem to Gatty and Edward Cullom. She grew up in Tarboro, where she dated golfer Harvie Ward as a teenager. At Tarboro High School, she was the captain of the girls basketball team that won the N.C. State Championship. As a senior, she was voted most popular girl.
Frances attended St. Lukes nursing school for three years and graduated with honors, as a registered nurse. There she met and later married Richard Swanson. They moved to Long Island and had four children, while she was nursing. Her brother Farmer recently died.
While living in Merrrick, N.Y., her husband died. Years later she married David Choate. They moved to Pinehurst in January 1988 and four years later joined McDonald’s Chapel, which they both love.
She is survived by David and her four children, Richard, Bruce and Gary Swanson, and Patricia Bethel.
