Opal M. Michael
Opal Runell Marshall Michael, 88, died Saturday, March 24, 2012, in Orlando, Fla., surrounded by her family, friends and loved ones.
A celebration of her life and passing into her eternal home will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church, 3820 Vass-Carthage Road, Carthage, with burial immediately following. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Boles Funeral Home, in Southern Pines.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Levon; her parents, Lola and Sam Marshall, formerly of Southern Pines; and her sisters, Rachel Taylor, of Sanford, and Ruth Thomas, of Wilmington.
She leaves behind two sons and a daughter, Larry Michael (Lynda), Tony Michael (Karen) and Delinda Marden (Bubba); and a stepdaughter, Mary Frances Higby. Fondly remembering Runell are her grandchildren, Kelli Michael, Dawn Marchioni, Traci Cox (Ryan), Stephanie Hyngh, Stefanie Michael and Travis Michael; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Lovingly known as Grandma, Gee Gee, Mema and Auntie, she also left numerous nieces and nephews.
Runell was a homemaker and career woman, holding various positions in sales and manufacturing until she and her husband started a trucking business in the Southeast. She was a member at First Baptist of Orlando for more than 30 years.
Runell loved her family, her church, traveling, playing cards, cooking, fishing and boating. Her passion was gardening, and her yard and gardens reflected her dedication and hard work. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a love of life, and battled her illnesses with strength and resolve.
