John L. Meloy

John L. Meloy

John L. Meloy, 92, went to be with the Lord February 19, 2012, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
John was a World War II AAF veteran; he became a flight instructor and later assigned to fly “The Hump” until the end of the war. He had a lifelong passion for flying and spent many years as a flight instructor. He was an amazing pilot; teaching others the ability to “fly by the seat of your pants”.
John was also an avid outdoorsman. He loved exploring forests, camping, hunting, canoeing, fishing and ice skating. He was known to spend hours enjoying sunshine and fresh air; even during his last days. He passed on this legacy to his children.
John earned his degrees at the University of Wisconsin (MS in Business). He fulfilled his ambition “to make a difference in young people’s lives,” becoming a teacher at East High School, Madison, Wis., until retirement.
He also enjoyed performing in plays with the Madison Theater Guild in the late ’50s.
John retired to Carolina Trace in Sanford, in the early ’80s, and his latest residence was at Fox Hollow Senior Living in Pinehurst, with special mention here of his dear friend Penny Schmidt.
He is survived by his four children, Janice Weinstein (Ira), James (Sharon), Jeffrey (Sandra), and Jorja Greig (Donald) and by eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral and memorial arrangements are pending.
