David H. Carpenter
David Hayward Carpenter, 84, of Southern Pines, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at St. Joseph of the Pines Nursing Center, in Southern Pines.

Mr. Carpenter was born July 13, 1927, in Rye, N.Y., to the late Thomas King Carpenter and Ida May (Hayward) Carpenter. He was a graduate of the Choate School and Princeton University. He also attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy during World War II. His working life was spent primarily with manufacturing companies that made machine tools (Bullard and Cone-Blanchard), mechanical power transmission products (Browning), and gas turbine engines (Lycoming). Most of his adult life was spent in Fairfield, Conn., but many years were spent in Woodstock, Vt., Maysville, Ky., and Ponte Vedra, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Reeves Carpenter, in 2003; and his second wife of six years, Jane Bell Carpenter, in 2011. Also preceding him in death were one brother and one sister.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by a son, David Reeves Carpenter and wife, Donna, of Bakersfield, Calif.; two daughters, Elizabeth Keyworth and husband, Alan, of Norwalk, Conn., and Karen Desmond and husband, Joe, of Danvers, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
