Susan L. McConnell

Susan Cole Leach McConnell, 70, of Pinehurst, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at FirstHealth Hospice House.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at The Village Chapel, in Pinehurst, with a reception to follow.
Susan was the loving matriarch and caretaker of her family. She was loyal and persistent, bold and courageous, humorous and kind.
Susan was born June 21, 1942, in Thomasville, to Edith and Charles Leach. She graduated from Stratford Hall in Danville, Va., and Greensboro College. She worked for more than 30 years as a speech and language pathologist in Danville, and in Thomasville.
In 1982, Susan married her second husband and life partner, Robert B. McConnell Jr. (Bob), and together they lovingly raised two daughters in Thomasville. Susan and Bob retired and relocated to Pinehurst in 1997 and established themselves as warm and welcoming friends to their neighbors on Pinyon Lane.
Family was central to her life, and she was a joy to those around her. She delighted in family gatherings, cooking, the beach and the mountains.
Susan is survived by her husband, Bob, of Pinehurst; her daughter Jane Cox and son-in-law, Scott Milvae, of Raleigh; daughter Abigail Kimbrough and son-in-law, Lance Kimbrough, of Charlottesville; grandchildren, Grace and Sophia Milvae, of Raleigh, and Henry and Margaret Kimbrough, of Charlottesville, Va.; a sister, Jane Newby, of Southern Pines; an aunt, Betty Hosler, of Thomasville; and the following cherished family members: Jenny Highfill, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Charles Harmon, of New York; Jessica Anderson, of Tucson, Ariz.; Rebecca Highfill, of Austin, Texas; Janie Hosler Banks, of Asheville,; Danny Hosler, of Denton; Steven Hosler, of Chicago; Max Leach, of Burlington; Sherry Didow, of Chapel Hill; Tom Shoe, of Star; Bobby Roberts, of Lancaster, S.C.; Jack Cole, of Summerfield; Louise McMillen, of Bedford, Texas; and Pat McConnell, of Chapel Hill; and their families.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Comprehensive Cancer Center, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC (in recognition of Dr. Bayard Powell and his team); The Foundation of FirstHealth, Pinehurst (in recognition of Dr. Robert Pohlmeyer and his team); or the charity of your choice.
