Annis H. Hooke
Annis Hines Hooke, 91, of Southern Pines, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012.
A private memorial service may be held at a later date.
Annis was born in Raleigh and grew up in Greensboro. She was the daughter of Paisley Turner (P.T.) and Vera (Pritchett) Hines, former long-term residents of Greensboro.
Ms. Hooke was voted “The Best All-Around” student in her high school class of 1938. Upon graduation, she attended the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC Greensboro). Prior to her senior year, she married Robert (Bob) Hooke, also of Greensboro, and the couple moved to Raleigh, where Annis completed a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Meredith College.
During their married life, Annis and Bob lived in Raleigh, Sewanee, Tenn., Alexandria, Va., Princeton, N.J., and Pittsburgh. They moved to Pinehurst in 1980, when Bob retired as head of the mathematics and statistics department at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories. Finally, they moved to Southern Pines in the mid-’90s, and they lived there together until Bob’s death in 2003.
Annis is survived by two sons, William, of Alexandria, Va., and John, of Aiken, S.C., and their respective wives, Chris and Gail; two grandchildren, Malcolm Hooke and Amanda Perez, both of Virginia; and a step-grandson, Sean Lambert, of Austin, Texas. Annis’ brother, P.T. (Pete) Hines Jr., predeceased her in LaGrange, Ga., in 2008.
