Susan Anne Stevens
Susan Anne Stevens
Susan Anne Stevens, 79, of Pinehurst, passed away peacefully Friday, June 15, 2012, at home, surrounded by loving friends and family.
A private memorial will be held in Pinehurst in the coming weeks.
Susan moved to Pinehurst in 1991 from Washington, D.C. She enjoyed participating in the Garden Club of the Sandhills, studying painting at Sandhills Community College, and antiquing with her lifelong friend Jo Ashby.
Susan was born in Lansing, Mich., and raised by her beloved grandparents until the age of 8, when she joined her parents for life in Chicago. As a high school student, she was awarded a prize for her work at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and became one of the first fine arts graduates from Southern Illinois University in 1954.
She pursued her love of the fine and decorative arts throughout her life and enjoyed traveling through western Europe and Africa. Williamsburg, Rhode Island and Nantucket held a special place in her heart, as did baseball, romantic comedies and the music of Frank Sinatra (Sinatra once dedicated a song to her at a performance in 1974).
She cherished her family and the many close friendships she made in Pinehurst.
Susan will be deeply missed by her son David Stevens and his partner, Paul Zabriski of San Rafael, Calif., her son Craig Stevens and his partner, Kim Moteleone, of Boulder, Colo., and her son Brian Stevens and his wife, Ellen Reynolds, of Washington, Conn.; her three loving grandchildren, Rita (22), Benjamin (14) and Alexander Stevens (11); and her beloved longtime companion, Francis “Pete” Millspaugh, of Pinehurst.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, P.O. Box 5889, Pinehurst NC 28374. They provided extraordinary care during her illness
