Marjorie H. Spicer

Marjorie Helms Spicer, of Southern Pines, died Monday, June 18, 2012, at Penick Village.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in Salem, Va.
She was born May 31, 1920, in Summit, N.J., the daughter of Franklin Wallace Helms Sr. and Lillian Valter Helms. Mrs. Spicer graduated from Summit High School in 1937 and Newark State Teachers College in 1941. She was an elementary school teacher in the Summit school system for more than 25 years. She loved spending time with her family every summer at the Jersey shore in Beach Haven, on Long Beach Island.
She and her family retired to Salem, Va., as she so loved the mountains surrounding the Roanoke Valley. She sang in the Chancel Choir and was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Spicer was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Harold Lafayette Spicer Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Spicer Beaver, of Southern Pines and Holden Beach; her son, Paul Franklin Spicer, his wife, Dida, grandchildren, Moriah, Noah and Esther, and great-grandson, Micah, of Cumming, Ga,; and her beloved dog, Cuddles.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Danny and Ron’s Rescue (saving and placing dogs in need of good homes), P.O. Box 604, Camden, S.C. 29021, in honor of her rescue dog, Cuddles.
