David was born May 14, 1959, in Charlotte, to David and Mary Kathryn Simpson, and was raised in Waxhaw. He attended Union County public schools, graduating from Parkwood High School in 1977. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1977 to 1984, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in business administration and a Juris Doctor degree. While an undergraduate student at Carolina, David returned home on weekends to work as a Union County deputy sheriff. David married Linda Jane Wright, his wife of 26 years, on May 25, 1985, in Pinetops. They were blessed by two wonderful daughters, Sarah Elizabeth in 1988, and Kathleen Grace “Kate” in 1991.
David delighted in traveling with his family, whether it was cheering for his daughters at a swim meet or vacations wherever the fish were biting, the food was outstanding, or he could expand his family’s appreciation of history.
David’s faith in Christ came alive and grew first at Tirzah Presbyterian Church, where he learned the Westminster Shorter Catechism, participated in Sunday School and Boy Scouts, earning his Eagle Scout award. With his family, he joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, where he served as a leader as a deacon, elder, youth Sunday School teacher and on various committees and projects. He led a life of commitment to family, God and service to others.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughters, Sarah Simpson Diebold and husband, Christopher, and Kate Simpson; parents, David and Mary Kathryn Simpson; sister, Kathryn Simpson Lassiter and husband, Stephen, and their sons, James Stephen and William Thomas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
