Lloyd “Junebug/LP” Patrick Tate, born in Pinehurst Dec. 28, 1925, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at home in Southern Pines, with his wife and dogs.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at The Village Chapel, in Pinehurst. Burial will follow at Hilltop Cemetery in the Walthour-Moss Foundation, Southern Pines.
He was raised in Pinehurst and spent his summers in Blowing Rock. Growing up in an equestrian family, he never ventured far from his roots. After a brief stint in the Navy during World War II, he returned to Pinehurst/Southern Pines.
He lived life with zest and was fortunate to be able to pursue his many passions, including horses, big trucks, flying and golf.
He was known as a horseman’s horseman. From race horses to show horses, foxhunting to Montana cattle drives, Tate enjoyed success in many arenas. He was honored with the American Hunter Jumper Association Lifetime Achievement Trophy (1999), NCHJA Horseman of the Year (2001), Sandy Minchin NCHJA Lifetime Achievement (2001), Sallie Busch Wheeler Sportsmanship Trophy (2003), and was inducted into the Virginia Horse Shows Association Hall of Fame in 2003.
He was a long-serving member on the boards of the Walthour-Moss Foundation and the Veterinarian Medical Foundation at NC State, and the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; all four of his children, Lloyd Patrick Tate Jr. “Jock” and wife, Kathryn, of Southern Pines, Kathleen Walsh Tate, of Decatur, Ga., Nella Cannon Tate, of Cary, and Zachary Reynolds Tate and his wife, Linda, of Blowing Rock; and his grandchildren Alexandra and Ella Fullerton.
