Alice Eleanor Heins
Alice Eleanor Heins, 91, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at her home in Penick Village, surrounded by her loving family.
A memorial service will be scheduled sometime in the summer at the Penick Village Chapel, with the Rev. Patsy Smith officiating.
Mrs. Heins was born in Old Town, Maine, to the late Charles and Christine Heald. She served as an Army nurse during World War II and for many years was a school nurse on Long Island.
She and her husband, Albert Heins, retired to Pinehurst in 1981, where they enjoyed friends and family, playing golf, playing bridge and traveling. She was a champion for the mentally ill and was a longtime member and avid supporter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
Mrs. Heins is survived by her four children, Janice Szot, of Gansevoort, N.Y., William Heins, of Southern Pines, Deborah Damon, of Vergennes, Vt., and Linda Privett, of Riverhead, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Adam and Sarah Szot, Julian and Grace Hattler, and Joshua Privett.
