Diane Spencer Wheaton, 60, of Southern Pines, passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at FirstHealth Hospice House, in Pinehurst, with her husband and daughter by her side.
A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at Boles Funeral Home Chapel, in Southern Pines.
Diane was born Dec. 21, 1951, in Richmond, Va., to the late Frank M. Spencer and Ethel B. Johnson Spencer. She was formerly employed by Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va., where she worked for more than 12 years as a medical secretary.
After moving to Southern Pines, she worked as a receptionist at The Pilot. She was a very giving, loving and caring lady and enjoyed helping others. She was a volunteer at NAMI Association. She enjoyed painting. She had the biggest heart anybody could have, and her grandchildren meant the world to her.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Benjamin Wheaton, of Southern Pines; a daughter, Melissa Wheaton Dunmire and husband, Bryan, of Rochester, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Cindy S. Wheaton, and Lee Campo, of New Orleans; and three grandchildren, Hunter Wheaton, Nicole Dunmire and Isabel Dunmire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Wesley F. Wheaton, in 2006; and a sister, Carrie Spencer.
