Marjorie M. Rutherford
Marjorie Manning Rutherford, 58, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at her home in Raleigh, surrounded by family.
She was born Dec. 14, 1953, in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Edward Nicholas Manning and Marjorie Curry Manning. The oldest of three children, Mrs. Rutherford grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., and attended the School of the Holy Child in Rye. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Smith College, where she studied economics and graduated with honors, including membership in Phi Beta Kappa.
She received her Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia, and began her legal career at Cummings & Lockwood in Stamford, Conn. There she met and married her husband of 32 years, Richard Woodson Rutherford Sr. They lived in Wilton, Conn., and Pinehurst, and moved to Raleigh, where they lived for 28 years.
In Raleigh, Mrs. Rutherford continued to practice law in the field of estates and trusts with Petree, Stockton and began a new career as a financial adviser with Edward Jones, where she worked for 15 years.
Mrs. Rutherford was member of Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, and North Ridge Country Club, and a longtime member of the Junior League of Raleigh. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she taught CCD classes, and served on education planning committees in the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh.
Her marriage to Richard Woodson Rutherford Sr. was blessed by three children and three grandchildren. She delighted in traveling with her family and friends. She was passionate about helping her clients, and was known for her patience, expertise, thoroughness, and honesty in planning and rendering advice.
Marjorie was a wonderful lawyer and financial adviser, and a kind, devoted and loyal daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend.
Marjorie is survived by her husband, Richard Woodson Rutherford Sr.; sons, Dr. Richard Woodson Rutherford Jr. and wife, Morgan Masten Rutherford, of Durham, and Edward Manning Rutherford, of Chicago; her daughter, Marjorie Ann Rutherford, of Philadelphia; her sister Mary Elizabeth Manning and brother Edward Nicholas Manning Jr. of Pinehurst; and her grandchildren Mercer Anne Rutherford, Richard Woodson Rutherford, III and Elizabeth Grace Rutherford; as well as 15 nieces and nephews.
Marjorie will be interred in Pinehurst with her parents.
There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, in Raleigh.
