George S. Pollard

George “Sam” Samuel Pollard, 89, of Southern Pines, passed Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center, in Southern Pines.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the Belle Meade Chapel in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Carl Naylor officiating. Military honors will be rendered, and a reception will follow in the Henley dining area.
Mr. Pollard was born April 28, 1922, in Overland, Mo., to the late Guy L. Pollard and Elizabeth (Watson) Pollard. He achieved his “gold wings” at Pensacola and served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 36 years as a Naval captain. He served in World War II and the Korean conflict, and played a key role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He attended Washington and Johns Hopkins Universities. While serving in the reserves, Mr. Pollard worked for the personnel department for AT&T. He was active with the Tin Whistles and the bridge group called the Wolves.
Mr. Pollard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Florence C. Pollard; two sons, George S. Pollard Jr. and wife, Ellie, of Charleston, S.C., and Allen V. Pollard and wife, Valerie, of Chesapeake, Va.; a daughter, Susan P. Frantz and husband, Paul, of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Pollard was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
