Andrew W. (Andy) Schultz
Andrew W. (Andy) Schultz, 76, of Pinehurst, died peacefully at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and has lived in the Pinehurst area for more than 14 years.
Andy was predeceased by his son, Derek; sister, Natalie Olsen; and brother, Gerhardt.
Andy is survived by his wife of 23 years, Darlene. He is also survived by his three sisters, Dorothy Young, Holley Reinke, and Lillian Schultz, who all continue to reside in Wisconsin.
Andy, an Army veteran, and past member of the Southern Pines Elks, attended Ripon College and earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. He received his PhD in 1970 from Rutgers University, where he focused on polyelectrolytes and polymer science. He had a long and successful career with SC Johnson Wax.
Andy started his career as a chemist and progressed to product research and to technical director for Worldwide Commercial Products Europe and Africa/Near East. He retired as vice president Worldwide Innochem Research and Development. Andy lived in Racine, Wis., as well as Ascot, Berkshire, England, during his 34-plus years with SC Johnson.
Andy had planned to earn his PhD and become a teacher. He chose his career in industry over education but those who worked for and around him could always sense his ability and desire to teach and share ideas. He shared a wealth of knowledge with others in a variety of countries, businesses and settings. His friends, family and colleagues could always depend on Andy to provide thoughtful, direct and often humor-filled comments.
A private graveside service will be held for Andy.
His family requests that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made in Andy’s name to FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374, who did so much to make Andy’s final weeks comfortable and filled with total dignity, or to Liberty Home Care, 300 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Southern Pines, NC 28387.
