Robert E. “Bob” Rhodes, 76, of Pinehurst, passed away Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at home.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
Bob was born in 1935 in Clifton, N.J. After graduation from St. John’s Cathedral High School in 1953, he served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He later graduated from Fairleigh-Dickinson University and further studied at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, receiving a Master’s degree in health education. In 1961, he married his wife, Mary, and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Bob managed marketing and communications with Union Carbide Corp. and Olin Corp. in the New York area for more than 20 years and was the recipient of the prestigious Clio award for his work on a television commercial for Olin pool chemicals. In 1980, he and his family moved to Charlotte, where he managed marketing and communications for Homelite/Textron Inc., and subsequently John Deere Inc., until he and his wife retired to Pinehurst in 1999.
Bob was a runner and fitness enthusiast and twice completed the New York City Marathon. In retirement, he worked as a golf fitness instructor at the FirstHealth Fitness Center, where he developed the “Golf for Life” program. Bob was also an avid golfer who played with the Pinehurst Country Club Men’s Golf Association, PCC Scramblers and the Happy Hackers. He was active in the Lake Pinehurst Association and acted as its vice president from 2009 to 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Faggio Rhodes, of Pinehurst; daughters, Staci Rhodes Shelley and husband, Patrick, of Baltimore, Lori Sybil Rhodes, of San Francisco, and Dr. Susanne Rhodes Killian and husband, Thomas, of Wake Forest; brothers, Joseph Rhodes, of Prescott, Ariz., and Frederick Rhodes, of Brick, N.J.; and two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Crabtree and Brendan Shelley.
