George M. Tomsho died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, in Charlotte.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at McCabe Bros. Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut St., Pittsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Sacred Heart Church, in Pittsburgh, with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
He was born in 1922, in West Hazleton, Pa. After graduation from West Hazleton High School in 1940, George served in the Army in World War II, then set out to see the world. He later graduated from Swarthmore College and further studied at the University of Michigan. He married his wife, Doris, in 1953, and over the next 30 years they and their children lived in more than half a dozen states before settling in the Pittsburgh area in the 1970s, where he was a graduate school professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He later consulted in Liberia, Ghana and Thailand. Following Doris’ death in 1984, he retired to Pinehurst and pursued his passion for golf.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris, and cherished children Michele and John. He is survived by his loving and grateful sons Mark (Linda), Matthew (Linda) and Gregory (Julie); his nine dear grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; his sisters Jean Riley and Pat Scolaro; and son-in-law William O’Reilly.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the John Gary Tomsho Memorial Scholarship fund, c/o Summersville Pediatrics, 400 Fairview Heights Road, Summersville, WV 26651.
