Thomas S. Derby

DERBY

Thomas Steelman Derby, 55, passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, in Seattle. His courage and positive attitude throughout his yearlong effort to overcome cancer was inspiring.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
Tom was the son of the late Vance and Bayra “Mitch” Derby. He grew up in Southern Pines and lived for many years in Florida. He had been a gold miner, sailor, landscaper, carpenter and horse trainer. He loved animals, nature, beaches and the sea. Tom had a generous, kind nature and was loved by many. We are sad that Tom left us so soon and blessed to have had him in our lives.
He is survived by his sisters, Julia (Judy) Derby, of Seattle, Penny Kuhn and her husband, Tom, of Charlotte, and Katy Sutter and her husband, Jeff, daughter Aubrey and son Derby, of Atlanta.
Memorial contributions may be made to an animal welfare organization of the donor’s choice, or to the nonprofit Health and Wellness Institute Cancer Research Group (www. hwicancerresearch.org).
