John Arthur Cushman
John Arthur Cushman, 98, of Southern Pines, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at St. Joseph Health Care.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Cushman was born in Terre Haute, Ind., to the late John A. and Eva Kolsen Cushman. He attended public school in Terre Haute, and was a graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in mechanical engineering with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was employed at Alton Box Board Co., Joseph E. Seagram Co. and FMC Corp. for 34 years, retiring as vice president of manufacturing in 1975.
He was active in civic organizations, including Boy Scouts of America, Rotary and Delaware River Navigation Commission; was a member and president of the school board of Nether Providence, Pa., member and president of the Delaware County Manufacturers’ Association, member and vice president of Springhaven (Pa.) Country Club, member of Rose Valley Borough Council for six years, member of the Country Club of Whispering Pines, member of Masonic Lodge 484 and Shrine Lodge, and a member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church.
He married Jean Cousley, of Alton, Ill., on May 18, 1940. The Cushmans resided in Louisville, Ky., Winchester, Va., Reedsville, Pa., Rose Valley, Pa., Whispering Pines and St Joseph’s Villas in Southern Pines.
He is survived by three sons, John Paul Cushman, of Worthington, Ohio, David Charles Cushman, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Thomas Patterson Cushman, of Ossian, Ind.; and a daughter, Jean P. Cushman, of Baltimore; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, in 2003.
