Joanna Meyer Brown, 84, of Southern Pines, died at St. Joseph’s Health Center (Belle Meade Retirement Community) Saturday, March 19, 2011.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 27, at Belle Meade Chapel, by the Rev. Carl Naylor.
Mrs. Brown was born in Biglerville, Pa., the daughter of Emanuel A. and Josephine Lehman Meyer. She attended Biglerville public schools and graduated from Swarthmore College in 1948. Her years after college were spent in Denton and Bethesda, Md., where she lived with her family.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, James K. Cooper, in 1972, and in 1975, she married John C. Brown, who survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Deborah Cooper, of Baltimore, Md.; sons, Donald E. Cooper and wife, Nancy, of Moorpark, Calif., and Terry and wife, Maureen, of San Francisco, Calif.; and grandchildren, Santana and Alexander James Cooper. She is also survived by her brother, Nicholas, and wife, Barbara, of Florida, and her sister, Patricia Battin, of Washington, D.C.; numerous nieces and nephews and step-children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
She was a wonderful mother and a very special wife, who had a most pleasant smile and was a friend to everyone. She loved to travel and play bridge and was fortunately able to do much of both. After her children were grown, she worked in the office of River Road Unitarian Church, where she is still a member. She later worked at the National Academy of Science in Washington, D.C., and in the admissions office of Gettysburg College from 1976 to 1980.
