Virginia Russell "Missy" Sloan
Virginia Russell “Missy” Sloan, of Southern Pines, died unto her Lord Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at her home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Southern Pines United Methodist Church.
Missy was born in Newton and spent most of her formative years in Cary. She was a graduate of Ashbrook High School in Gastonia and continued her education at Western Carolina University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in parks and recreation in 1975. After working for the recreation departments of Gastonia and Charlotte, she was employed as a recreational therapist at the Friendship Manor nursing facility in Roanoke, Va. In 2001, she relocated to Southern Pines, where her love for animals led her to establish a pet care service.
Missy’s special gifts of caring for the elderly and compassion for those less fortunate were evidenced through her volunteer work in the Food Pantry and Helping Hands ministries at her church home of Southern Pines, United Methodist.
Missy was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She will always be remembered by those whose lives she touched for her unfailing courage, her passionate love for people and animals, and her spontaneous sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Roland Sloan Jr. and her mother, Virginia Gadd Sloan, both originally from Charlotte. She is survived by her loving sisters, Karen Sloan Perry and her husband, Bob, of High Point, and Cindy Sloan Davis and her husband, Eddie, of Pinehurst; her niece, Sloan Perry Anderson and her husband, Charles, of Madison, Ala.; nephews, Chris Perry, of High Point, and Drew Davis, of Seneca, S.C.; uncle, Albert “Pete” Sloan and his wife, Marcia, of Charlotte; and several cousins.
