Laura Thomas (Wilson) Mathews
Laura Thomas (Wilson) Mathews, 81, died Friday, March 11, 2011, at Kingswood Nursing Center, in Aberdeen.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 14, at Powell Funeral Home, in Southern Pines. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, at the Community Congrega-tional Church, in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Dr. Glenn Phillips Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, in Southern Pines.
A native of Rocky Mount, she grew up in Carthage. She was the daughter of the late H. Lee Thomas and Betty Taylor Thomas. She was a graduate of East Carolina University, majoring in education, and spent her career working as a schoolteacher in the public school system. She taught for 30 years at Cary Elementary School and cared deeply for the children. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother to her children, stepchildren and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Cates; and a brother, H. Lee Thomas Jr.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur J. Mathews; daughters, Allyson Phillips and husband, Glenn, of Goldsboro, Pam Hamlin and husband, Bruce, of Frisco, Texas, Laura Jan King, of Charlotte, and Jacqueline Kim Nichols, of Hendron, Va.; a son, Steve Wilson and wife, Lisa, of Virginia, Minn.; stepdaughter, Joan Layel and husband, Michael, of Charlotte; stepsons, Robert Mathews and wife, Sarah, of Southern Pines, Richard Mathews and wife, Martha, of West End, and James Mathews and wife, Lisa, of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Patricia Raino, of Pinehurst; brothers Frank Thomas and wife, Anne Helen, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and John Thomas and wife, Helen, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
