Margaret S. Cimino
Margaret Sayre “Peggie” Cimino, of Southern Pines, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, with her family by her side.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, in the Belle Meade chapel.
Peggie was born June 26, 1920, in Alameda, Calif., to William Randolph and Anna Katherine Christensen Sayre. She attended the Anna Head School for Girls in Berkeley, San Mateo Jr. College, and Stanford University, before marrying Saverio Michael Cimino on September 2, 1946. Together they raised four children.
Over the years she volunteered for a wide variety of organizations in California, New York, Wyoming, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and North Carolina, including driver for the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and State of California and State of Wyoming Central Committees of the Republican Party.
Mike and Peggie retired to Pinehurst in 1983 and made their home in Doral Woods before moving to Belle Meade, in Southern Pines, in 1999. During their retirement, Peggie volunteered as a mentor for children in the public schools, and at the Belle Meade Assisted Living facility. She was also one of the founding members of the Sandhills Community College Foundation and treasurer and honorary board member of the Moore County chapter of the North Carolina Symphony.
Peggie was an active member of the Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. In addition to being a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Peggie enjoyed playing bridge, needlepoint, the opera, driving, reading, traveling around the world with Mike, and great friendships.
Peggie is survived by her son, Michael Brian Cimino and wife, Marian, of Anchorage, Alaska; daughters Margaret Louise Cimino, of San Francisco, Carol M. Hepler and husband, Bradford, of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., and Rosanne C. Owens and husband, Rusty, of Green River, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Fredrick F. Sayre and his wife, Jean, of Los Gatos, California.
She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband of 60 years, Mike Cimino.
