Frederick W. Moore

Frederick Willard Moore, 92, of Southern Pines, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center.
He was born June 18, 1918, in Watertown, N.Y. to the late Louis W. Moore and Rae Willard Moore. He was a veteran of his country (U.S. Navy, retired commander) and served in the Navy in both World War II and the Korean conflict. He received a master’s in philology from Harvard University and a doctorate in French from Yale. He also held a B.A. from Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was a professor emeritus of the State University of New York at Albany. His hobbies included golf, sailing and reading. He also taught Power Squadron.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Eleanor W. Moore, of Southern Pines; two daughters, Constance M. Grahn and husband, William, of Cary, and Janet M. Kirby, of Durham; two sons, William E. Moore II and wife, Karen, of Fairport, N.Y., and Charles R. Moore and wife, Beth, of North Amity, Maine; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one step-grandson, and two step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Edward Moore.
A private family service, with military honors, will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church at a later date. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, in Watertown, N.Y.
