John “Johnny” Walton Myers, 63, of Rockingham, was called home to heaven Monday, May 30, 2011, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, at Sweet Haven Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mitchell Roller officiating. Interment will follow at Candor Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
He was born Aug. 29, 1947, in Moore County, a son of the late Herbert W. and Katie Sugg Myers. Mr. Myers graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in photojournalism. He served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and was a member of Sweet Haven Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. John worked for many years as a photojournalist for several North Carolina newspapers, including newspapers in Moore, Montgomery, Cumberland, Lee and Richmond counties. He also wrote and supplied photos for the Charlotte Observer. He was an NRA instructor and a North Carolina concealed handgun permit instructor.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James L. Myers. He is survived by his wife, Wendy Myers, of the home; daughters, Layla Myers Mabe, of Pinehurst, and Jessica Teodorski and husband, Chris, of Pittsburgh; a son, Robby Myers and wife, Cindy, of Pinehurst; grandchildren, Trey Lewis, Logan Myers, Nicholas Mabe, Matthew Myers, Raina Teodorski and Phoebe Teodorski; a brother, George H. Myers and wife, Sue, of Candor; sisters, Katherine Myers Young, of Yokohama, Japan, and Rebecca Myers Willis, of Olanta, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
