William J. “Bill” Evans, 83, of West End, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011. His passing was sudden and unexpected. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the West End Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow. Additionally, a memorial celebration will be held in Pittsburgh at a later date.
He was born Nov. 18, 1927, in Pittsburgh, the oldest of six children of Helen and William D. Evans. Bill enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, and served in the Pacific theater as a fire controlman. After service, he started the Pittsburgh Dial Company in 1948. He built a very successful business and retired after 42 years with his wife to North Carolina. Bill was a very quiet, kind, hard-working, generous and genuinely loving man.
Bill was the beloved husband of 55 years of Marion Evans. He was also the loving father of sons William A. Evans, Dennis F. Evans and daughter-in-law Jennifer Welden Evans, and James R. Evans and daughter-in-law, Krissy Welch Evans. Of special note, he was the adoring grandfather of his beloved Jenna Lynn, Luke Benjamin and William Daniel. Bill is also survived by two brothers, Richard and Ronald Evans; and brother-in-law Jack Welding. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Anne Welding; and two brothers, Bobby and Alan Evans.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, and to the West End EMS for the wonderful care and compassion given to Bill.
