Elizabeth Ann Matthews, of Southern Pines, died Friday, July 8, 2011, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
A celebration memorial service of Ann’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at First Baptist Church, in Southern Pines. The family will welcome friends in the fellowship hall after the service.
Ann was born in 1932 in North Little Rock, Ark. She attended Baylor University. She moved to Southern Pines in 1963 and began working at Moore County Hospital, transferring to the Pinehurst Medical Clinic for the next 25 years, until retirement.
Ann met John Gideon “Gid” Matthews and married him in 1978. 
Ann was a member of First Baptist Church, Southern Pines, for  45 years and a faithful member of the choir. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and generous, caring member of her community.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Stephanie Baldwin and husband, Jimmy; sons, Bob and David Smith, of Lafayette, La., and Ret. Col. Keith Smith, of Arkansas; grandsons, Josh Baldwin and John Lee Smith; granddaughter, Krystal Breeze Smith; and great-grandson, Brayton Smith.
