Barton K. Slemmons

Dr. Barton Kent Slemmons, 82, of Pinehurst, passed Sunday, July 10, 2011, at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, at Boles Funeral Home, in Pinehurst.
Dr. Slemmons was born Jan. 5, 1929, in Aberdeen, S.D., to the late Senn and Margaret (Henry) Slemmons. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for 31 years, including as commanding officer of the 3rd Medical Battalion 3rd Marine Division based out of Camp Lejeune during the Vietnam War. He achieved the rank of captain and served two tours at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C., and went on to become the chief of orthopedics at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. He later worked as professor of orthopedics at the University of Missouri Truman Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Slemmons was an avid golfer his entire life and continued his passion for the game after retirement to the Pinehurst area in 1986.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arlene (Provost) Slemmons; four sons, Steven Slemmons and wife, Shannon, of Birmingham, Al., Kirby Slemmons and wife, Sandra, of Orange Park, Fla., Kent Slemmons and wife, Cindy, of Birmingham, and Jeff Slemmons, of Germantown, Md.; a daughter, Jane Albert and husband, Tom, of Ellicott City, Md.; a brother, Daniel Slemmons and wife, Marilyn, of Escondido, Calif.; a sister, Ann Bauder and husband, Merl, of Johnson City, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
