Nellie Marie Hasty Bennett went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 1, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. She was 29 days short of her 92nd birthday as she peacefully passed away at home in Cameron.
Nellie Marie was born July 30, 1919, in Wendell, to Wade Hampton Hasty and Lora Pearl Johnson Hasty. She spent most of her early years in Moore County, more specifically in the Cool Springs Church community.
Nellie was a multi-talented person in that she excelled in sports, being a fine basketball player. She was a dynamic musical person who was so fond of singing in church, as well as being a guitar player. Career-wise, she worked in the mercantile industry for many years, rising to the management level with Lee’s Dime Store in Carthage. For several years, she even took over management of the family farm.
She was married to Ralph Woodrow Bennett, who preceded her in 1989. Nellie is survived by a daughter, Elva Scarborough, of Buies Creek; a son, Donald Ralph Bennett and wife, Anne, of Cameron; and a brother, Dr. Fred Hasty, of Fayetteville; six grandchildren, Rusty Scarborough and wife, Dayna, Marty Scarborough and wife, Ellen, Scotty Scarborough and wife, Tammy, Michael Bennett and wife, Christy, Bennett Scarborough, Jennifer Bennett and Brenda Swearingin; and eight great-grandchildren, Kirstyn Marie Scarborough, Kelcie Bennett, Brooke Bennett, Olivia Scarborough, Evan Scarborough, Owen Scarborough, Draegen Scarborough and Zachary Swearingin.
The family received friends Sunday at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage.
Memorial graveside services were held at 9 a.m. Monday, July 4, at the Cameron Cemetery in Cameron. Following the service, the family received friends at the home.
