Uriah Samuel Deahl Jr., 96, of Carthage, peacefully passed into the arms of Jesus on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, with his daughter Betsy Spencer at his side.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Carthage United Methodist Church.
He was born Oct. 24, 1914, in Chicago, and later moved to Tallahassee, Fla. He attended the University of Florida, Ryan School of Aeronautics and Northwestern University before becoming president of Derby Steam Laundry and Linen Supply. He later owned a chain of travel agencies before retiring to Carthage in 1983. He was active on the Carthage town council for several terms. As a member of the Methodist Church, Sam was an active lay minister, and his passion for the Gideon organization and their mission led him to minister to people in the Carthage jail system.
Sam is survived by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Spencer Deahl; daughters Lamar Deahl Blum and husband, John, of Elgin, Ill., and Elizabeth “Betsy” Deahl Spencer, of West End; son-in-law, Dr. John Clow, of Cooperstown, N.Y.; a brother, John J. Deahl, of Northfield, Ill.; grandchildren, Edward Samuel Clow, of New York City, Christina Blum Erbeck and husband, Bruce, of Gilberts, Ill., Rebecca Blum White and husband, Brian, of Pickerington, Ohio, and Jessica and Amanda Erbeck, of Springfield, Mo.; and great-grandchildren Spencer and Sarah White. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Deahl Clow.
