Shepard N. Dunning
Shepard Nash Dunn, of Southport, passed away Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.
A celebration of life was held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Southport Community Center, Southport.
Dr. Dunn was born and raised in Sumter, S.C., where he graduated from Edmunds High School. After discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1946, he attended and graduated from Davidson College. Next, he completed his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his internship and residency in ophthalmology, he began practice in Columbia, S.C. Later, he became one of the founders of Columbia Eye Clinic. He also established the Brunswick County Eye Clinic and Robeson County Eye Clinic before retiring from Carolina Eye Associates in Pinehurst.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Dunn, of Southport; sons William A. Dunn and wife, Ruth, of Carrollton, Texas, Joseph R. Dunn and wife, Gail, of Raleigh, and Shepard N. Dunn Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, of Vincennes, Ind.; grandchildren Kristin Hooke, of San Antonio, Texas, Amanda Dunn, of Round Rock, Texas, Susan Dunn, of Carrollton, Texas, Bailey Dunn, of Charleston, S.C., Page Dunn, of Raleigh, Nash Dunn, of Vincennes, Ind., Ryan Dunn, of Evansville, Ind., Caroline Dunn, of Vincennes, Ind.; sister, Alice Nash Lightsey, of Atlanta; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann Nash Dunn, of Sumter, S.C., and Dr. J. Ralph Dunn, of Sumter, S.C.; and brothers William J. Dunn, of Knoxville, Tenn., and J. Ralph Dunn Jr., of Raleigh.
Shepard was an avid reader, hunter, sailor and basketball fan. He delighted in TexMex cuisine, seafood, sardines, boiled peanuts and anything with garlic.
