Marilyn Burke Sherman, of Southern Pines, passed away Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at her home.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Chapel at Belle Meade, in Southern Pines. A visitation with the family will follow the service.
Marilyn was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and graduated with a degree in home economics from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now called Car-negie-Mellon University).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, whom she met at Carnegie Tech. They were married for 54 years and together raised five children.
Marilyn and Jack moved from Pittsburgh to Pinehurst in 1988, and lived on Lake Pinehurst for 17 years. After Jack died in 2005, Marilyn moved to Belle Meade. They were members of the Country Club of North Carolina and the Pinehurst Country Club, where they were avid golfers for many years. They were also members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and actively involved in the building of the current church, where Marilyn taught Sunday School.
Marilyn loved her family and friends. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading and participating in her book club, and traveled extensively throughout the United States and oversees. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Her oldest son, Jeffery John Sherman, passed away suddenly in October 2005. She is survived by two other sons, William T. Sherman, of Atlanta, Ga., and Christopher T. Sherman, of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Sherman Krauch, of Gardiner, Wash., and Anne Winkeljohn, of Mason, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and her brother, John Burke, of Chicago, Ill.
