Jack Walton Cooper, 89, of Southern Pines, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at First Baptist Church, in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Benny Edwards officiating. Family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Burial, with military honors, will be 1:15 p.m., at Bethesda Cemetery.
Born March 20, 1922, in Paw Creek, Mr. Cooper was the son of the late John Glover and Emma Lynch Cooper. He graduated from Paw Creek High School and married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Etta Wright. They celebrated 67 years of marriage. He attended N.C. State before being drafted and was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve during World War II. During his Navy service, he sang in the choir at First Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Cooper retired with 36 years of service from the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office in Suitland, Md. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Southern Pines. After retirement, he pursued his favorite game of golf. In his later years, his lifelong love for music showed forth in the Memory Support Unit at St. Joseph’s Health Center.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Terry and husband, Scott Broadbent, of Woodbridge, Va., Carol and husband, Keir Careccio, of Santa Fe, N.M., and Denise and husband, Jon Waters, of Stafford, Va.; four grandchildren, Jessica Delk, Justin Broadbent, and Zack and Colt Waters; two great-grandchildren, Burnley and Cooper Delk; brother, Gary Cooper, of Wilmington; sisters, Frankie Riker, of Lake Worth, Fla., Elizabeth Palmer, of Southern Pines, and Emily Lindsay of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.
