MARTIN

Grace Monroe Martin, 84, of Pinehurst, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at her home.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, in Southern Pines.
One of eight children of the late Alton O. Monroe and Beulah Gillis Monroe, Mrs. Martin grew up in Manly. She married her husband of 63 years, the late Ralph Burton Martin Jr., who was stationed in nearby Fort Bragg during World War II. Together they shared a love for gardening and traveling, most often to visit extended family. She was most content spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often enjoying their sporting events and other activities.
Mrs. Martin was a breast cancer survivor of more than 50 years. She was a member of the BPO Does, and a member of Yates-Thaggard Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by a son, Mark Martin. She is survived by sons Larry Martin and wife, Joanna, of Southern Pines, and Charles Martin and wife, Fonda, of Fuquay-Varina; daughters, Becky Warner and husband, Bruce, of Pinehurst, and Pam Combs and husband, Tim, of Aberdeen; grandchildren, Michael Bachman and wife, Connie, Stephanie Auman and husband, Bryan, Drew Martin and wife, Meg, Hanna Harrison and husband, Josh, Christa Martin, Elizabeth Combs, Scott Martin and Tim Combs, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Katie Bachman, Nathan, Natalie, and Emily Auman, Charlie Grace and Sam Martin; and a sister, Gladys Jasic, of Aberdeen.
