Mary “Polly” Schechter passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Congregational Community Church, in Southern Pines.
Polly was born in 1935 in Yakima, Wash. She attended the University of Washington at Seattle, the Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Ore., and George Washington University.
She lived for many years in the Washington, D.C., area, where she was assistant to the secretary of the university and the protocol and events coordinator in the office of the president at the Catholic University of America.
In 1999, she and her husband, Hans, retired to Pinehurst, where Polly was a dynamic member of the community. She served a term as president of newcomers and was on the house committee of the Pinehurst Country Club. She sat on the English-Speaking Union’s board of directors for six years, and was their scholarship chairperson for three. She enjoyed a term as chairperson of the Azalea branch of the Pinehurst Garden Club. In 2003, she co-chaired the fundraising auction of the Habitat Gala. Polly was also an active member of Act II, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Women of Weymouth.
Polly enjoyed traveling, golf, the symphony and theater, card and board games with friends, and walking her beloved dog, Pepper. She will be missed.
Polly is survived by her husband, Hans B. Schechter, of Southern Pines; her daughters, Jan E. Kuzminski, of Hannover, Germany, and Beth A. Kuzminski, of Southern Pines; her grandsons, Charles Prather, of Towson, Md., and Matthew Prather, of Germantown, Md.; and her son-in-law, Christian zur Nedden, of Hannover, Germany.
