Margery G. Tovey
Margery Guston Tovey, 82, of Whispering Pines, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, in Southern Pines, with the Rev. Grady Perryman officiating.
Mrs. Tovey was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Chicago, to the late Victor and Helen Guston. She graduated in 1951 from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., with a bachelor’s degree in art and education. She married George Tovey that same year. From 1951 to 1952, Mrs. Tovey taught special education classes. She later attended Trenton State College in 1968, earning a Master of Arts in teaching. She taught sixth-grade history and language arts for 12 years in Pennington, N.J., worked three summers as assistant director of the reading and recreation program for inner city children, and volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader. She also volunteered her time in Tulsa, Okla., with the Philbrook Art Museum. From 1966 to 1974, she and her family hiked and camped in New Hampshire, where they climbed and hiked 46 separate 4,000-foot peaks in the White Mountain region.
Marge and George retired to the Whispering Pines area in 1991, where she volunteered at Sandhills Community College, tutoring and working with students for more than 12 years. She was the captain of the CGA golf course rating team since 1998 and was a member of the Country Club of Whispering Pines, where she actively assisted with the landscaping of two of the courses. She enjoyed golf, gardening and her laptop.
Mrs. Tovey is survived by her husband of 59 years, George Tovey; one son, David George Tovey and wife, Elaine McCool, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two daughters, Karen Tovey and husband, Edward Weiss, of Annandale, Va., and Nancy Tovey and husband, Gregg Reynolds, of Williston, Vt.; and six grandchildren, Joshua and Benjamin Weiss, Julia and Evan Tovey, and Alisia and Dan Pascoe.
