Walter James Woodcock, of Pinehurst, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011.
Viewing was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Boles Funeral Home, in Pinehurst. The funeral was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Brownson Memorial Church, in Southern Pines. Burial was at Bethesda Cemetery, Aberdeen.
The son of Bruce A. Woodcock Sr. and Floy Peterson Woodcock, Walter was born in Wilmington, and relocated to Moore County in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. While in service, he served in the Korean War on the USS Valley Forge CVA45 carrier, and also a tour in Yokosuka, Japan. After retirement from the State of North Carolina, he retired to Pinehurst.
Walter enjoyed his many RV camping trips across the country with his wife of 35 years, Clara Allred Woodcock. He also had a passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He loved and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his fellowship with Brownson Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Clara Allred Woodcock; children, Walter “Woody” J. Woodcock, Jr. and wife, Amanda, of Sanford, Traci W. Adams and husband, Danny, of Pinehurst, Robin C. Johnson and husband, Chris, of Nashville, NC; grandchildren, Kylie Williams and Mark, of Richmond, Va., Jessica Lewis, of Sanford, Zach Adams and wife, Amy, of Greenville, S.C., Dustin Adams and friend, Heather Ridlon, of Raleigh, Gavin Johnson and Myah Johnson; great-grandchildren, Ethan Lewis, of Sanford, Noah and Emme Williams, of Richmond, Va. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Allison Lea Woodcock; and his brother, Bruce A. Woodcock, Jr.
