Francis Denver McGarey died Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at St. Joseph of the Pines, Southern Pines.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Belle Meade Chapel, Southern Pines, with a reception to follow.
Mr. McGarey was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Rose O’Brien and Francis D. McGarey Sr. He obtained an engineering degree from King’s Point Merchant Marine Academy and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He loved New York Jets football and was an avid paddle tennis player.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice T. McGarey; sons F. Jerome McGarey (wife Heather W. McGarey) of Louisville, Colo., Patrick O. McGarey (wife Barbara M. McGarey) of McLean, Va., Francis X. McGarey (wife Kristin F. McGarey) of Darien, Conn., Thomas A. McGarey (wife Dr. Elizabeth Goodman) of Wellesley, Mass.; daughters Sheila McGarey of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Alice McGarey-Martin (husband Padraic W. Martin) of Cuttingsville, Vt., Rosemary McGarey Macdonald (husband Scott A. Macdonald) of Wheaton, Ill., Maureen McGarey (husband K. Durland Barnes) of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren Francis D. McGarey II, Erin M. Macdonald, Colin T. Macdonald, Tiernan O. Martin, Patrick O. McGarey, Jr., Liam P. Martin, William J. McGarey, Claire H. Macdonald, Andrew W.S. McGarey, Brian V. Macdonald, Abigail E. McGarey, Alison T. McGarey, Charles D. McGarey, Mattie R. McGarey, Lily K. McGarey, and Samuel J. McGarey. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Charles O. McGarey; and a sister, Margretta McGarey McMahon.
