Edmond W. Overstreet
Edmond Wilson “Ned” Overstreet, 75, of Pinehurst, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2011, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst, surrounded by family, after a long battle with cancer.
A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 1, in Bedford, Va.
Ned was born in Bedford to Robert L. and Harriet W. Overstreet. He graduated from Bedford High School and Virginia Tech, where he majored in electrical engineering and was a member of the Corps of Cadets. After graduation, he was stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army.
His professional career as an electrical engineer began with Potomac Electric Power Company. He then worked with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Postal Service, but spent most of his career with the USDA (Rural Electrification Administration).
In his early years Ned and his friends roamed the fields and streams of Bedford County, hunting and fishing with the flies he tied. As an adult, he took up golf and continued to enjoy fishing in his spare time. Upon retirement, Ned and Anne enjoyed traveling and became avid Virginia Tech boosters, rarely missing a football or Bowl game. Ned continued to play golf in Pinehurst until his health prevented it.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Anne; his daughters, Michelle R. (Stan) Bragg, of Springfield, Va., and Susan O. (Knut) Skare, of Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren, Casey and Hunter Bragg, and Anya, Anders and Erik Skare; his brother, Robert L. (Nancy) Overstreet, of Ruckersville, Va.; his sister, Mary O. (Henry) Drott, of Swarthmore, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Virginia Tech Foundation for Virginia Tech College of Engineering, 3046 Torgersen Hall, Blacksburg, VA 24061; or to the Foundation of FirstHealth, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
