Joseph Takacs, 90, of Pinehurst, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Pinehurst Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, in Pinehurst, after a long illness.
Interment will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
He was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Phillipsburg, N.J., the only child of Steve and Gizella Bucsics Takacs. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1939 and from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., in 1943.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army Combat Engineers. He was discharged in February 1946. Following his discharge he was employed in the human resources division of the Western Electric Company Allentown Works in Allentown, Pa. He retired in 1981.
He and his wife, the former Elsie Arfmann, of New York City, resided in Bradenton, Fla., until they relocated to Pinehurst in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elsie; a son, Stephen and his wife, Ann, of Raleigh; daughters, Christine Takacs, of Macungie, Pa., Jamie Dewey and her husband, Nicholas, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kathryn Kostohryz and her husband, Kelvin, of Rowayton, Conn.; and six grandchildren, Matthew and Stephanie Takacs, Emma and Sarah Dewey, and Claire and Stephen Kostohryz.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
