Jane L. McGee, 90, of Southern Pines, died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center.
She was born March 12, 1920, in Richmond, Va., the daughter of the late John Henry Liesfeld and Theresa Naglesman Liesfeld. She was raised and educated in Richmond and also attended William and Mary Extension, now VCU.
Mrs. McGee was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. James E. McGee Jr. in January 2008. They were married 64 years.
The McGees raised their family in Bluefield, W.Va., where they lived for more than 40 years. They retired in 1994 to Hilton Head Island, S.C., and then moved to Southern Pines in 2001. Mrs. McGee was an avid bridge player, having attained her Life Master in duplicate bridge. She also enjoyed playing golf, needlework, traveling and spending time with her family. She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, serving on the altar guild; the Mercer County Medical Auxiliary; the Salvation Army Auxiliary, and East River Garden Club. She also attended The Village Chapel, Pinehurst.
Mrs. McGee is survived by her three children, son, James E. McGee III and wife, Mary, of Morehead City; daughters, Dell Leist and husband, Herman, of Richmond Hill, Ga., and Anne Hedges and husband, Steve, of Greensboro; six grandchildren, James E. McGee IV, Charles McGee, Kathy L. Wideman, Sarah L. Menard, Kate Hedges and Douglas Hedges; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. McGee will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
The family would like to extend their grateful appreciation to the entire staff at Belle Meade and St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center for the care provided to both their parents.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. at Belle Meade Chapel, Southern Pines.
